Calling on folks
The Rare Snow Day in South Louisiana
We got the rare snow day here in south Louisiana. First we walked around in our front yard repeating the phrase, “this is unbelievable” every few minutes. Soon we saw a bundled stranger turning on to our street from Commerce Street. He gave the cliche cajun “ayeeee” and said, “seems like its still comin’.” I replied cordially, saying “its unbelievable,” but soon realized it was our friend Father Brad from the Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Church. He had walked in the snow from the rectory (2 miles). We couldn’t have been more pleased to see him. I apologized for not seeing his text pulling out my phone to see no unread messages.
“I didn’t text, I just came calling.” You might think that Father Brad is 75 or older. He’s 38. We loved it. When its snowing outside like this, you can just assume that everyone is home and not busy.
It felt like Mr. Edwards showing up at the Ingall’s place. We welcomed him in, had a cup of coffee, warmed up for a bit and then all walked back to the Catholic Church together. By the time we got there, it had gone from “this is unbelievable” to “should we be out here?”
Two Lessons:
1. When it snows, get out and enjoy it. Go for a trek.
Be Careful! You really could get stuck in a bad situation.
Missye got to the wet/cold breaking point and she and I decided that we needed to get somewhere sooner than later. As we struck out on our own, the wind started to blow and for a brief moment, with my 7 year old daughter in tow, I thought, “Are we about to get be in trouble?” The wind howled and the snow came down from the sky and the trees, and we could not see 30 yards down the road in either direction. I started thinking about Mr. Edwards walking through the river, his clothes in his hands over his head.
We made the final climb up Catholic Hill with my daughter standing behind me to keep the stinging flakes from blowing in her face. It was not scary, but it was eye opening.
